I subscribe to the idea that the soul is the product of a physical brain. Otherwise it would be hard to explain how brain injuries can change the character of a person.
Given that all order (at least in dynamic systems) we encounter in this universe requires energy to maintain it, I have a hard time figuring out where the energy for a brain independent soul would come from. Though I'd be curious if there is an answer to that.

It depends on what you define the soul. Many have made the traits of the soul synonymous with thought and mind. In that sense, the soul does die with the brain. However, the aspects believed to be possessed by the soul beyond mental processes (spirituality and immortality) are supposed to exist beyond the physical.
I think that a soul in this respect does not exist at all. But, if it does exist, it is not part of the physical body.

Science really does not know how the brain works or what the soul is.
However Biblically man's soul is composed of a dust statue and the breathe of life.
Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Sealed in a room with dozens of sensors and measuring gadgets a soul ought to no longer be detected . For others who decide for reincarnation ,this must be my first go around because of the fact I have not have been given any previous existence reviews making it complicated to settle for others so pronounced as previous lives . I be conscious with the tens of millions of slaves and prostitutes and spear sharpners ,that no person seems to keep in mind those lives . They the place extreme priest kings queens and retailers of great fortunes and lands . i think of a regulation needs to be written which will as quickly as and for all do away with faith because of the fact the genuine scurge it is . Worse then heroin or crack faith needs you to believe in an after existence . And for you to serve others in the international . properly i'm so sorry yet I refuse to serve thankyou .

The only realistic answer is: nobody knows. As for opinion,I have mine - don't we all? - and it is that all my instincts tell me the brain is a mere apparatus and like any aspect of that realm of reality we can perceive through our senses,it only represents the material aspect, not the greater underlying reality. Yet I must concede that thus far there is no evidence for the survival of consciousness after death. But that only impacts on the iscussion insofar as we view the concept of the soul as related to individual consciousness. We may merge into a collective consciousness, for example. But it's all speculation, ultimately. So we decide for ourselves. Wishful thinking? Perhaps.

Our soul is there and will always be.
It is what our spirit and unconscious is and as long as our conscious is a wake, it will lie dormant. Only when we are truly awake will we be "awake."
(I don't think I made any sense there at all.)
