from a professional setting. Since the gift is not expected and he's married, it's crucial that the gift is not too personal. The ideal would be to get something his family/wife can enjoy also but I don't know them to know what they need. Gift certificates not an option.

Any suggestions?

a fruit basket, a basket of goodies, such as coffe, tea, hot chocolate baskets, you can buy them premade or you can put one together yourself if you know what they all like.

Does getting a family pass to the local zoo or aquarium count as a gift certificate? I don't think so. My nephews are 3 and 7 and love the aquarium.

Often these places have food court and a gift shop - the viewing is meant to be a whole day family outing. Maybe you could check to see if there is any sort of family pass that gets you admission and meals or meal vouchers for the family? I don't think that is too personal.

unless you know they drink dont buy wine, instead get something that he and his wife can use, and it doesnt look like you are coming on to him, I would keep it practical without seeming too extravagant otherwise the wife will wonder what you are up to, I would and I have been married 22 years. You say it isn't expected and you don't know what these people like, yet no certificates, you need to be very conservative then in your selection. How about a gourmet food basket or similar.....

Maybe something like theatre tickets, if you have an idea of his hobbies and interests and can leave the date open. That's inclusive of his wife, and you can present it as you really enjoyed and hope he may too, of course if it isn't his thing he can gift the tickets on.

i would get a nice basket and fill it with goodies. i did one like this for my boyfriend's dad who he isn't too close to. i put coffee, chocolates, hot chocolates, marshmellows,"manly" smelling soaps and candles. i also included some nice cheeses and some gourmet candies.

if he drinks coffee, i like a coffee themed idea. you can purchase a nice coffee grinder for 25 bucks. include some yummy coffees, maybe a trio of flavors, some flavored gourmet syrups/creamers, a set of mugs, etc.

or you could always go with a gift card to a nice restaurant.

EDIT: if he has kids, include some kid friendly snacks. like a bad of gummy bears for each. he would really appreciate that. i always love it when people include my son.

A digital picture frame like this would be nice. It is not something a lot of people would buy for themselves, but is nice to have. Even if he is not a techie type himself, one of his kids could get him interested in it and could probably transfer the pictures onto it for him to display at home or work.
