Carrying capacity usually refers to the number of livestock an acre of land or farm will support (provide enough forage). It is correctly expressed in animal units, an animal unit being the amount of forage required to feed one 1,000 cow. I five sheep equal one animal unit, a bull 1.2 units and so on. Some people refer to the individual number of animals, but there is a lot of difference in the nutritional requirements of an 800 pound Jersey or a 2,400 pound Maine-Anjou bull.
