my son, who turned one a week ago, has been running a temp of 102 for about 4 hours. He doesnt seem to have anything else going on other than the fever and a very slight cough... hes coughs are very rare.
my question is... at what temp should I call the doctor? I am already worried... because he has never really been sick. I called the "ask a nurse"-- she was absolutly NO help... a RN and had no idea what she was talking about? He had his MMRs on monday, but Im pretty sure this is not related.

Give him appropriate doses of tylenol and rotate it with ibuprofen. As long as his fever goes down, I wouldn't worry about it much. If the fever lasts more than 2 days, then I would at least call the doctor. It's very likely its from his shots.

Whomever said previously that they don't worry until 108 degrees is very very wrong. Damage to the brain begins at 106 therefore doctor's recommend taking a child to the ER at 105.

Good luck and I'm sure he'll be feeling fine soon.

A fever is a common reaction to shots. Both of my kids experienced that. 102 is also not that high for a 1 y/o - though you'd be in tough shape! Did you give him/her some Tylenol?

I'd say call when you feel you need to, but we never did if his/her general affect was okay and the fever was below 104 - at that age anyway.

My daughter had her 1 year MMR on Monday too. My doc told me that a fever can show up 7-10 days later. So that could indeed be it.
Have you given him tylenol or ibuprofen to bring down his temp?
Personally, I wouldn't call the doc until 104.

You can alternate between tylenol and motrin because motrin usually works quicker and lasts longer. I'd call the doc tomorrow if I were you, just so you don't have to wait until Monday. And then you can stop worrying. You can also give him a luke warm bath and wet his hair, to keep him cool. Put him in cool clothes with light blankets, to keep him from overheating. It's very possible it's the MMR. It can affect them for over a week.

Around 104. Kids can tolerate higher fevers thatn adults. Call Monday if he's still running over a hundred. Call right away if, in your opinion, he just seems to be sick or distressed or acting weird. Handling calls from worried parents is a nomal part of his doctor's job, don't worry about bothering or sounding dumb or anything else. If she couldn't handle taking calls on weekends she would have specialized in dermatology. Good luck.

my three yr old a few months ago had a temp close to 104 if he would of hit that I would have brought him to the emergency room just in case but I have herd it's not till there temp is like 108 to worry, it's up to you what you do, but pay close attention and give a fever reducer like Tylenol it helps a lot make sure you give it on time too.

They say if it gets to 104 then call the doctor. Rotate tylenol and motrin. Thats what my doctor said to do for my son.

The body is trying to reset the temperature to kill bacteria and viruses. It is a symptom, not something that needs to be cured." Acetaminophen will bring the temperature down, but that is not always necessary.

Cold baths also used to be used. Kemper discourages that now. "Let the fever work."

Walls agrees. "Fever is an ally," he says. "People used to believe it destroyed brain cells, but it doesn't. What about convulsions in children with high fevers? "If this is going to occur," Walls says, "it will be at the first fever spike. You won't have time to bring the fever down to prevent it."

If it goes up to 104 and/or you can't get it to go down soon, I would bring him to the ER. Otherwise, just keep an eye on him and monitor his temperature closely. I hope he feels better soon!
