They make a good switch since they are very low resistance when switched on - lower power consumption and less signal loss.

CMOS is short for complimetary MOSFET. A MOSFET is a voltage controlled switch. A CMOS is 2 MOSFET's connected at their drain and source. The most basic CMOS structure serves as an inverter.
