jeff they launched them from 6 carriers,not islands,each carriers compliment of planes was appox 60 ,190 planes attacked in the first wave and 171 in the second wave,the plan was for the first wave to rearm and return but when no carriers were present Ad nagumo felt the risk too great and made for home

There are survivors to Pearl Harbor, and one of them has said that there were over 600 (by his count) airplanes present. That's a lot of airplanes, and they had close access because of the takeovers of Pacific islands they had made.
