My son has the worst breath sometimes. Horribly bad! I get him to brush his teeth and it still happens sometimes. I don't want him to get made fun of at school for it. Is there anything I can do? Anything he can eat to prevent it? He hates mint toothpaste he thinks its too hot. And I know he cant really gargle. I brush his tongue and cheeks too. Thanks!

I do brush his teeth and I dont give him candy, or junk. The dentist said it could be weak enamel on his baby teeth. Both of my brothers had it. But thier second teeth were perfect.

It can happen, even in healthy children. Mint toothpaste is too strong. You should give him Colgate or Crest for children.

Make sure to have him floss. There could be food caught between his teeth, along the gum line, on the tongue, or on the surface of his tonsils. Act makes a blue dental rinse so kids can see where they need to brush really well.

A dry mouth can also be the cause, if he tends to breath through his mouth.

Does he suck on his fingers? Sometimes an odor can develop with repeated exposure to saliva, creating more bacteria in the mouth than normal.

One of the major problems could be allergies or an illness. Drainage from the sinuses or gastro reflux can send off an unpleasant odor.

You may want to get him checked out by his pediatrician.

I generally wouldn't recommend human toothpaste only because its so toxic when swallowed. I do recommend the dental bones that they have out. Is there a chance he might be getting into garbage or able to eat feces? I would bring to the vet just in case there is something more, such as an abscessed tooth or something wrong with its throat to cause the bad breath BUT they also have doggy toothpaste there. Mine in SC sells it for about $15 which isn't too bad and you should be able to buy it without making an appointment. Beautiful breed by the way :)

After the dental visit is over and if the odor is still there I would consider the doctor there may be an underlying infection but be sure to tell the dentist sometimes it has to do with the cavities and the response about diabetes with diabetes its a fruity odor so I think thats one less thing you have to worry about

He may have food stuck in his teeth. You should have him swish water in his mouth a couple of times before and after brushing. This help to release any food that was not brushed out. You can have him believe that the swishing is a game. A kid at that age will do anything if it includes playing. Hope this helps.

Oh my. If a 5 year old child needs cavities filled, there is something wrong.

He is not eating right, or you need to help him brush 3 times a day!!!!

And yes, cavities do make breath smell bad. It's a rotting tooth, rot smells bad.

YOU need to brush his teeth. Kids don't have the dexterity in their hands needed for brushing their own teeth until they start to write in cursive-- about 8 or 9 years old-- until then you need to help him brush his teeth for 2 whole minutes morning and night, you need to floss his teeth regularly ( every day if not every other day) and you need to brush his tongue and cheeks like you already do. Don't forget to brush his gums as well, bacteria builds up on gums as well.

My 4 year old nephew has had terrible breath. My sis took him to the doctor and it's actually a symptom of allergies. Does he have dark circles under his eyes? The doc put him on allergy meds and his breath cleared right up, along with the dark circles. They make lots of kids toothpase flavors too, like bubblegum. I think Crest makes it.

Three things.
Watch his diet. There may be foods that react with his stomach to produce bad breath. This can be spices, garlic, etc.
He may need to see a doctor. Chronic sinusitis, tonsillitis and digestive problems can cause bad breath.
Have him get a dental check up to rule out tooth decay or gum disease as a cause.

it is probably the cavities causing the bad breath...do you also get him to floss? He might have food stuck in his teeth as well which could be the cause; you can buy floss with handles for kids to use in the toothpaste aisle.

well if you are really worrying about it and want the stank gone and you really do all that stuff i would suggest that you dont us the kids tooth paste and look for the tooth paste with the doctors approved signal and i would suggest the mouth wash two one in the morning, evning, and night and floss and use the mouth wash after each meal (after meals it would help to brush then mouth wash)
P.S. sorry about the breath i have bad stank to and the yellow color.
P.P.S. i use the pronamal tooth paste
