early last week I visited a certain Jewelry store in town w/ my mom. I decided on a diamond and the engagement ring. I told the guy I would come back on Saturday to purchase it and asked him if I needed to put anything down to hold it. He told me that I did not need to put any money down and shook my hand and told me that my handshake is worth money. Well when I came back on Saturday to purchase the engagement ring I found out the diamond was sold (but the engagement band he still hand). He said he needed to order me another diamond (same quality, etc.) but it would take 2 weeks. I left the store again shaking his hand and telling him I cant wait to get the diamond and purchase it from you. Should I buy it from this guy or just go some place else because this is no way of doing business. Anyone else been in this kind of situation?

I would not spend my hard-earned money in a store whose employees treated me that way.

When I make a major purchase, I expect major service. My advice to you is to find another jeweler, one who honors his word. A good, trustworthy jeweler is important, as you will buy from him for many many years to come: wedding rings, anniversary gifts, holiday presents, etc. The guy you spoke with is not trustworthy.

yes you should buy it. i work in jewelry. if you do not purchase a ring then it is up for grabs for whoever will, even if you were planning on buying. we hear this ALL the time, "oh im coming right back to buy it". and they never do. some jewelry stores will not hold your jewelry even with a down payment which is why he told you not to put one down, some require the total amount then and there. dont be mad at this guy, he cant tell a person coming in, "oh no i cant sell you this one because im waiting until sunday because this guy said he was coming back", he most likely would have lost his job or lost out on money if you had not come back. i tell people this all the time, if you find it and you like it and are ok with the price then buy it then, you never know if it will sell, especially this time of year things sell out very quickly. so it wasnt this guys fault, the store might not offer holding a piece for only a down payment. trust me i do this every day and have for a few years, if you like the piece then wait 2 weeks and get it, next time buy it when you find it. congrats on the engagement.
