sorry so late- but if it EVER happens again a quick fix is candle wax... light a candle to soften the wax... stick the wax onto the nail (candle out of course) and monitor it- If it continues, bring the dog to the vet.

She should be fine. You went into the quick on the nail which hit the blood supply. In the future you can get some stuff at the pet store for when this happens, I don't know the name of it, but it's by the nail clipers etc. Also her toe may be tender for a day or so. My GSD just completely ripped off her one toe nail and she favors that foot. The vet said she will until the new nail grows in and gets long enough to cover the quick.

Sorry I'm a little late in answering just saw.
Don't worry this happens even to vets.
I would suggest you go to the pet store when you can and get BLOOD STOP this is to stop bleeding when this happens,
it is a powder that you put on and apply a little pressure, it also has an antibiotic in it.
Your dog I'm sure will be fine.
For the one who waid Pupppy I hope it's a year old is out of it I start cutting my puppy nails at 2 weeks old.

It will be fine. At the pet store you can buy something that I think is called something like quick stop. Ask at the store sometime. It's a tiny bottle of stuff with directions on what to do. I have never cut any pet's nails my mom has always done it but we have used it on guinea pigs, and dogs before.

Got to say this... Your PUPPY ! it better be around a year old or it shouldn't have needed its nails TRIMMED (key word there). Always look really close at the nail, you will see where it narrows and looses its "tunnel effect" Never cut closer to the pad than that, secondly, always hold your dog in a fashion so if it does yank away that the nail will come out of the clippers not into it. On that note, never use human clippers on the animal either, use a rounded cutter blade, you wouldn't want someone to cut your nails from the side would you ? Corn starch, baby powder, flour, anything that will cause the blood to coagulate.

If you have any styptic powder, use that on it. Otherwise you can take some corn starch and put some on the nail until it stops bleeding.

She will be fine, just keep an eye on it for more bleeding when she is running around on it.

If you don't have any cornstarch, then just apply pressure with a paper towel. Don't freak out about it, you'll scare her and she won't let anybody cut her nails.

The best thing to do is to take a bar of soap and rub it on her nail. The soap will stick and stop the bleeding. I have heard that dogs can bleed to death this way (at least small ones can)
