Yes, ALWAYS spay/neuter, unless you are a professional who shows, breeds and raises champions, also screening them for hereditary diseases before breeding the individuals.

Why should we, you ask?

Well, first of all it prevents quite a few diseases in the dogs. Reproductive problems such as mammary tumors, testicular cancer, and false pregnancies occur repeatedly in unspayed/unneutered dogs.

Second, it helps stop the animal overpopulation crisis in the US. Spaying/neutering dogs that don't win shows and aren't certified by the OFA will help reduce the number of animals being slaughtered in shelters.

Thirdly, it makes dogs and bitches cleaner animals. Females stop getting their heats and won't bleed all over the house, and males will stop fighting with one another over a female in heat. They'll stop marking territory indoors. Also, it will be easier to contain them when they want to mate because their mating drive will be gone.

I am pro-spaying and neutering, always have been, always will be.

I volunteer at an animal shelter and have first hand experience with the number of pets euthanized because of the lack of homes. I say Yes spay/neuter your pet. Not only will this help the overpopulation problem, but also makes dogs more likely to get along with other dogs because competition for a mate is no longer there (there have been documented cases of dog bites on people because males were protecting a female in heat). If you look at dog bite statistics, most of them are by dogs that aren't spayed/neutered.

Spay or neuter. Go work in an animal shelter for a week and you will see shy. Also, most vets. seem to agree that if done before first heat cycle, (female) and right when males begin to lift there leg to urinate, the chances of acquiring many types of cancer can be reduced or eliminated benefiting the dogs overall health. I reluctantly had my female Great Dane spayed and I am glad I did. She is much more attentive and reactive to training and training commands.
I also did the same with my Rat Terrier with same results.

Sometimes cats have extra ovarian tissue that the vet may not have noticed when she was spayed. Spaying is very routine and vets sometimes remove just what they are looking for and leave any excess tissue behind. If ovarian tissue is left behind, she can still go into heat, but she cannot get pregnant because she does not have a uterus anymore. I would take her to the vet, but some cats are just overly affectionate and act like they are in heat, sticking their back end up in the air and rolling around. See what your vet says.

I totally agree with spaying and neutering. It is the best thing to do. You don't have to worry about stray dogs roaming around your house, blood, or your dog getting moody, false pregnancies..ect..

I have my heart pom spayed and it is the BEST decision I ever made! I am very happy I did it and I have no worries about heats or pregnancies!

I don't think people realize the pain in the behind it is to have intact male and female dogs. It is a real pain. You have to keep them separated for 3 WEEKS!!! You feel bad for the boys because they get upset and whine, yap, pant a lot, do not eat, they are totally NOT themselves at all. It is sad.

ABSOLUTELY SPAY or NEUTER!!!! I use to work for an ASPCA Shelter and it is heartbreaking to see with your own eyes what happens to the over population of domestic animals, ESPECIALLY cats and kittens. In the shelter that I worked at, EVERY year for every 1000 animals brought in, 750 were put down. The shelters are over run and no one wants to help out. If you truly want to help out (this is to everyone who reads this) PLEASE, PLEASE, spay or neuter your pets. I bet if you were to even just volunteer at a shelter for 1 day, you will get the picture. And for those of you who think you can allow your kitty to give birth and then assume taking the kittens to a shelter for placement, WRONG!!! They are put down, probably before you get out of their parking lot. There are way too many un-altered cats out there. Very Sad.
I apologize if I have went over board, but people really should experience it, it will make you wake up and do the right thing.

Spay and Neuter away! Too many people see animals as money makers or don't care about spay and neutering- this is why there are so many shelters full of unwanted pets and many are euthanized.
Spayed and neutered animals have lower chances for certain diseases, such as infections, cancers, etc.

I think people should spay/neuter, because anyone who's ever set foot in a local shelter can see the overwhelming fact that there are already more animals then there are loving homes for them. In some shelters, strays that are brought in are also euthanized within the same week, due to lack of space.

There's nowhere for these animals to go, why risk adding to those numbers? Financial status shouldn't hold you back, as many shelters/rescues provide a low cost clinic for these surgeries.

If you're going to breed, do it responsibly, or not at all. Too much over-breeding, inter-breeding, etc. Instead of ''bettering the breed'', many are making the breed worse, by breeding bad temperament, bad health, etc.

I can't think of any reason not to spay your dog. There are so many unwanted pets in the world today because of people not neutering their pets that it only makes sense to have yours spayed.

Unless the dog is going to be bred it should definitely be spayed or neutered.

Besides the health issues, an intact female is gonna have every male in the neighborhood sniffing & digging around your yard and you'll have to deal with indoor mess a periodic intervals...

Altered dogs are just easier to live with in every way.
