That may be the case for tv evangelists, but at the local parish level things are vastly different. I am Catholic and in our Dioceses some of the small town Parishes are closing within 5 years. Those that are not closing are struggling each month to pay the electric bill and insurance. Some of the once paid positions such as secretary are now filled by part time employees who also donate some of their time or are filled by volunteers. The economy is really bad right now and it shows in the financial reports. There are Church buildings needing repairs and the repairs are being put off. The mega churches do waste a lot of money on making themselves look pretty, but the local parishes are really struggling now. Do not throw a generic blanket of money grubbing or high life living on all Churches. The Catholic Church is not the only denomination facing this issue either. Unfortunately, many Parishes of many denominations are dealing with this.

I think you've taken this expression out of context. The world functions on money...just try and live without it. But in saying this, murders, war, family feuds, drugs and so many other things have been because of money. The word "greed" may be a one syllable word, but it ranks at the top for human vices. Think about it...the average person complains about the cost of gasoline and blames the greed of the oil companies for fleecing their pockets and then channeling that money back to unfriendly countries or terrorist groups. And this is only one example of evil and greed. How many people do you know that have argued over money??? This is what that expression means.
Okay, let's move on to the church and that plate they pass around on Sunday. Churches are a type of non-profit organization, subject to many of the same expenses everyone else pays, such as water and electricity. Churches also have their own unique expenses, such as Sunday School supplies and of course, the pastor's salary. The money comes from the donations of its members. Actually, a church's very existence is dependent upon the generosity of its congregation. If the church has a wealthy population, you'll know by the size and opulence of the building. Wealthy people like their church as affluent looking as their homes. Does this make them evil because they have money? Not necessarily. Most churches have councils that decide how every penny should be spent and, for the most part, the money goes back into the church or any number of community outreach programs. Believe it or not, even the poorest of churches have outreach programs.
Conversely, a poorer congregation may have a smaller church building, and be located in a moderate to poor neighborhood. They have what they can afford.
Okay...you're thinking I know greed exists in churches. I hear and read about it all the time. And you are right, it most certainly does exist. Sin is everywhere. But consider this, of all the thousands of churches in this country, the reason you hear about an embezzlement or other theft is because it is rare enough to be newsworthy. Compare it to air travel; you know there are hundreds of flights everyday that go without a hitch, but it's the near miss or the horrible accident that you hear about.
So the saying money is the root of all evil is true, but it doesn't root everywhere.

What an intelligent Q! While the bible says that biblically people can give 10% of their tighthings to the church and this is clearly explained in the bible...(it has also been mentioned that money is good for the proper use, but once greediness of money is displayed then it really is a sin...Love for money is the root of all evils),,,,,,,,,,then in this case it is expected that people in the church use them for their common aim or objective which is to support all church projects and programs and particularly to help eradicate poorness among the needy....Well simple because the church mission-vision is not the sincere helping the poor, aiding the handicapped, eliminating poverty, reaching out for the sick, it is all about business..........we are all human and we automatically become greedy when we see the free flow of money...then the human mind works and become evil and wicked and now use money as a tool to indoctrinate people, catch people's attention, brainwash and whitewash people's mind on how they can encourage them to donate or give contributions using the church and my God as well..........I dont know, but you heard it straight from so many people how all churches come big or small are rich and so rich that their personal lifestyles have even emerged like kings...but in truth they are Kings of nothing.ebcause they are the people's money..earned with their own blood and sweat.............any clear conscience? That is the question.................

First of all money is NOT the root of all evil. The love of money is. We should not love money more than we love God. Second a good church does not "beg" for money. It grows on the tithes that it collects from the faithful. All money belongs to God anyway. He just wants some of it to be used to spread the Word of God. He could just do a bunch of miracles and then everyone would believe right? Wrong not everyone would believe. Only by hearing someone's personal testimony and a clear presentation on the Salvation Message.
Sounds like you need to either find a good church, or study your Bible more. Or both. Alot of people answering your question need to do the same.

You are misquoting the Bible, so your question is just meant to find yet another thing to gripe about.
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil
If you think about it, it is true. Many crimes are committed for the sake of money.
I have never been to a church that begs for money, and I've rarely missed a sunday service in my entire life. I've been to many different churches too. Your perception, in my view, is unfounded.

first off, a small correction, money isnt the root of all evil, the verse says the love of money is the root of all evil. Second off some churches do love money. So whatever conclusions you want to draw from there, be my guest.

Money is not the root of all Evil, it is the love of money in which is the root of all evil. I have yet to see a church beg for money they pass around a tray for you to donate to the church, It helps pay for the electric and utility bills of the church. Most pastors I know don't get paid, they usually have another Job for that. the churches do not force your donation.
The bible does not say money is the root of all evil, It says the " keyword" "Love of moneys is."
but withg other churches whom are like that , beware of wolves in sheeps clothing.

It's the love of money that leads to suffering. There is no evil.
I don't love money, although I make a lot of money. I love myself, my higher Self which creates SO MUCH value for me that I continually come up with new products and services and companies.
When you love your true Self, you become connected to a source of infinite intelligence and this connection results in financial abundance in life.
When you love money, you neglect your true Self and that leads to a life spent deceiving others, stealing, frauding, even killing people for money.
This is what great spiritual leaders mean when they warn people against loving money instead of loving your true Self. Loving money is not evil, it just leads to suffering.
Loving your true Self leads to money, which you can enjoy and even give to worthy organizations, and this is precisely what Warren Buffett did when he donated over a billion dollars to Bill Gates' Foundation.

Money isn't the root of all evil. The quote is the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.
And churches, by and large, ask for money for the same reason that charities do.
