Bass will stay in a general area as long as it's treats thier needs such as structure, water depth, and food. bass will stay in areas for periods of time because they would much rather expand energy to catch food and run from predators then move around so if the area your fishing has a good amount of things bass and other fish need they will stay there until its gone. But in the summer months a bass's blood will warm and the fight is on.

Because bass do not swim up river like salmon. They stay around the same area all year round. They will only leave if they know there is a predator in the water with them. And if the technique is working keep using it.

Have you considered the depth the river up stream and down stream. Where you are catching them could be the deepest pool in that area of the river. Bass tend to look for comfort 1st, then food in the winter. Their comfort zone also includes a lot of things they eat. Small Mouth Bass have been recorded traveling as much as 20 miles in a river in the fall to find the deepest hole in a river.

I think a lot of things factor into it, the primary being a good food source. Temperature of the water and the amount of oxygen in it have a lot to do with it as well.

How big were the bass?

I may be wrong but I didn't think bass swam up stream. I thought that was just trout and salmon. I figure the bass came from over flown ponds and such. But this is not concrete fact.

Bass aren't like salmon. Keep fishing while it is good. Try meal worms. Bass love em!

bass like to stay where there is a source of food and plenty of cover, so they see no reason to move yet. This might change as the weather gets colder though so enjoy while they are there.

um, sometimes fish stay in the water like that, idk, iv caught alot of fish around there...sometimes i think its like if u feed birds from birdhouses in the fall and stuff, then come winter they don't fly south because they think they can support themselves on the birdfood so they all die...IDRK lol
