It's required by law to put that on the label so that idiots do know that yes peanuts are in nut's and peanut butter, so that they can not get sued over it when some retard who is allergic to peanuts tried to eat them....
This is also the reason why they put caution: hot on coffee cups at resteraunts, because some old retard spilled coffee on himself and decided to sue the resteraunt and actually won because there was nothing on the cup that said the coffee was hot.

It's like required or soemthing, but it just looks so stupid and funny! I just got a jar of mixed nuts and it say "May contain peanuts" I think that anyone who wouldn't know that mixed nuts or peanut butter have nuts in them are morons. It's like how coffee has to say "Caution Hot" lol :)

It's called a "CYA statement" - which stands for Cover Your @$$...
They put it on EVERYTHING that the company makes JUST so that they cannot be sued if some brain dead moron doesn't realize that they use Peanuts in PEANUT BUTTER - though there are probably such things as "Peanut-free Peanut Butter" (I guess they'd use soy or something?!?!?!?!?) ;););););)

The same reason that the plastic fish bowl I bought actually says "fish not included" on the box. Hmmm. How about the water? Is that already in the bowl?

I'm sure the people at Jif and Peter Pan would agree that it really sounds stupid. However, since the notice is required by law, they have no choice in the matter.

the comparable reason that a packet of toothpicks needs training on it and the comparable reason that a lighter needs to have written on it 'could be flammable'. everybody is stupid and companies would desire to hide themselves in case human beings have an attack of stupid and report a lawsuit. 29 mins in the past

They're protecting themselves from the consumers, that has found more and more ways and reasons to sue them for something stupid. For example the woman who sued McD because she burnt her lips from the hot coffee. And she WON!
