Because when God created Man, He gave him the gift of Free Will. You get to choose how you will run your life, and the results of your choices aren't always the right ones. In Matthew's case, he most likely felt he was right in doing what he did. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Holy Ghost would intervene for people like him?

Mathew Murray was a screwed up individual. He went to church and did all the right things, but that doesn't nessasarily mean he was saved. He was mad at YWAM because they didnt believe his health (mental) was stable. My grandparents are good friends of his parents and my aunt was a good friend of Matthew's. I know for a fact that my family have xome screwed up issues (porn, homosexuality, etc) that they dont take to God. Maybe Murray simple held a lot of contept for the church and wanted to end it...

God, the holy ghost whatever you want to call it, doesnt have control over things like this. These things happen. It is tragic but people have a lot of pain.
Christians are going to say the holy spirit did stop it through the security guard, but this is sick. (Then again, I am a pacifist).
If God stopped this, He/she/it should also stop a lot of other tradgedies in the world. Some things are in our control, some things are not, however that does not mean God can/will interfere. Hope that makes sense.

This question forms an interesting paradox that actually kind of defeats the purpose of religion. Christians claim that God gave us free will and that he cannot control our actions. However, they also claim that he is omniscient and knows of everything that we are going to do before we do it. If he knows everything we are going to do, than our actions are predetermined. If our actions are predetermined, and our actions are what determine whether we are saved or not, than whether we go to hell or heaven is actually determined before we are born. If long before we even existed, our fate of whether we are saved or damned is decided, than there is not much we can do about it. Thus, there is no such thing as free will. People can decide to believe one or the other, but not both. They contradict each other.

The entire idea of "free will" is that we can, if we want, totally ignore the Holy Spirit. Sad, but true.

Why do you say the Spirit didn't move him? How are we to know.
The only thing we do know is that a crime was committed.
