Does anybody know why military flashlights have an angle and are not straight like civilian flashlights. The design goes back many, many years, They must have had some reason why they made them with an angle.

Becuase they are made to hang off of the H harness that conects to your combat belt. With the angle you can turn the flashlight on and have it shine straight ahead and allows you the use of both of your hands still.

common sense

In the old BDUs there was a little slot in the left shirt pocket flap and on the flashlight there was a little clip that fit perfectly into the pocket, so you could hang it there for hands free use. At least that's what I did. Plus you could sort of stand them up (except they never really stood up right because of the stuff on the bottom cap). I use a mini-mag these days. I can hold it in my mouth if I need hands-free. I still have two of those old ones but they are worthless. I don't even bring them camping with my girlfriend.

Edit: I agree with the next couple of posts, but they never really pointed at what you wanted them too (whether on the belt or the BDU shirt), any minor body movement sent the beam all over the place and the beam was never tight, they were definitely typical G.I. At least with the mini-mag you can mount it on everything. I think it's the best $12 invention since the entrenching tool.

They were easier on the wrist also you could put or attaach them to your pocket/shirt to aim the light at what you are looking at ever tried to hold the flashlight for yourself????

They are easier to hold. When you hold a regular flashlight, you're hand is at an unatural angle.

The angle permits the holder to strap the light to his/her belt while the light still points forward. It isn't easier to hold or use than an ordinary light.

So they can be clipped on your uniform and still shine in front of you so your hands can be free. It also helps the beam shine wear you want it if you need to hang it up someplace.

So you can clip them to your gear. No one uses them anymore.
