Depends where you are. In some cities, people mix a lot and randomly: Vancouver, Hong Kong, Dubai, Marseille and Amsterdam are like that, of all places where I've lived.

Others are more segregated, like Toronto, Buffalo, Bogota and New Jersey.

Others are very segregated, like Sao Paulo, Houston and San Francisco.

So it depends on external factors like earnings of people by ethnicity, property prices, availability of public schools, etc.

Because people are more comfortable being around people of their own kind in one way or another. Doesn't always have to be race. Can be based on relegion or economic standing or elderly or young families with children or singles or gays or college towns.

I like cities with different ethnic AREAS. I don't like people being of different ethnic groups being run out so it's totally a one ethnic group and town to where there's no one you can talk to or are basically forbidden to be.

In America immigrants have historically lived together in ethnically defined neighborhoods because it is where their sponsor lives and/or it is where a ready-made social and economic system exists that they can tap into.

Most immigrants are not wealthy. When they emigrate to the United States of America or Canada they need a place to live and food to eat and, most importantly, a job that will at least sustain this modest standard of living. Particularly for immigrants whose primary language is not English, they are more apt to find "credit" in the form of free or reduced rent and food and clothing and transportation from others who share their ethnic background, language and culture.

As an immigrant's economic fortunes improve, he or she can literally afford to move out of an ethnically defined neighborhood and into one defined by its affluence or its artsiness or the prowess of its educational system or any other number of desireable attributes that may be lacking in an ethnic neighborhood.

Because, no matter how we may evolve in other areas, we are, at heart , tribal/pack animals. Our own kind seems familiar and safe to us. We stay where we are comfortable and where we know the rules. For example, would you behave in the same manner in an inner city ghetto as you would in a farming community?

well if they are new to a country maybe they seek out people from the same country they are from to feel a bit more at home. i think people in general are just more comfortable around others who look and sound like them and have similar customs.

Wait a minute, your question implies that the messycon illegal aliens are bigots. If they would rather be around their own kind then that's racist. Can you imagine an white American saying him or her would rather be around their own kind? No, because they would be labeled as racist!!! Of course the illegal alien messycons are bigots and that is the reason they group up based upon race.
