I have used 8 grit sanding disks used to remove rust from a ship's hull in preparation for paint. The lowest I have seen for household use is 20 for stripping floor finishes. With regular sheets of sandpaper the lowest I have seen is 36.

unless grits are diff in US the number means the # of grains of sand per square inch
so 50 is course and 400 is very very fine. I've never used anything higher than 400 for any fine product.
I'm sure there are finer, then you get into emery cloth with can be even finer and is used wet
very fine sandpaper can clog up easily which is why it is good to switch to emer cloth for anything finer
