nooo not the ecg, not the constent beep beep beep of your heart rate

anotehrone that does 4 beeps, one after another, each increasing in tone, it goes up.

It's the pulse oximeter, one of the monitors we use in anesthesia. It's connected ot the clip they put on your finger.

The clip shines two wavelengths of red light through your finger, and a sensor picks up how much was absorbed. That corresponds to the color of your blood. The more red it is, the more oxygen is in it. It displays a number that shows us the percent of oxygen saturation of your hemoglobin, so we know whether or not you're getting enough oxygen.

The tone of beep corresponds to the number. As the saturation drops, so does the tone. We can know what your sat is just by listening. If we're busy doing something else, we are easily alerted to a dropping saturation. Anesthesiologists are very tuned in to that beep.

We can also hear if the heartbeat is irregular, and then will look at the EKG to see what's going on.

It's the most important monitor we have, after our own eyes and ears and brain.

Here is a picture of one. On this monitor, the top tracing is the EKG, and the bumps below it are the pulse ox tracing. The "98" is the saturation (98% is good) and the "88" is the heart rate.

It's a life support machine that monitors heart beat and pulse. Health professionals are taught to listen to the patterns of beeps to know when the cardio system is functioning correctly or if it is not.
