You must have E-6 on for a minimum of two years before you are eligible to compete for E-7.

Depends the branch of service. Additionally, advancement to E-7 is not an automatic thing. It is ultimately decided by high ranking board members who decide based on quotas by MOS or Rating, performance, test scores, voluntary community service, college degree status, leadership skills, basic military knowledge, duty variations etc. All of these can play huge roles in who is selected for E-7.

wow I had 11 years time in service and probably 4 years time in grade when I made E7 out of the secondary zone. Not sure if there's a minimum or not. In fact i seem to remember being surprised when I was told I should get over to personnel and check my files for the board.

Its competitive - promotions to E-7 are not automatic based on time.

The points required are determined in part by test scores. So the minimum score is different every test cycle.

well my hubby is regular army , he joined in may 96 ,
E5 07/99
E6 07/01
E7 05/06

so for him it was ten years
