I was at a party last night and a friend was saying they want to get a puppy. I suggested they get a crate because the pup will be left while they are at work - they can get home at lunch, and some one else we work with started yelling that I shouldn't have a puppy if I need a crate! It was BARBARIC!
No, docking a puppy's tail without anesthetic is barbaric, but using a crate for three or four hours a day is not.
My puppy is fast asleep in her crate now - the door is wide open and she has another bed, which she uses in the day sometimes but when she really wants to sleep like a baby, she always goes in there through choice!
She was comfortable in there from the first night, she didn't whine and wake us up, only to go out for a wee, then slept through again.
What is with the hysteria? Why has this woman flipped out at me? Why is it any different to shutting the back door of your house and not letting them roam outside?

If the house were to catch fire, my puppy would not be able to jump through the double glazing units anyway. However, if she was not in her crate, she could chew through the wiring for the house, kill herself and set the house on fire!
What a stupid thing to say!!!! if you object to a crate because the door is shut, then the very same principle goes for your front and back doors - hell, why not do away with the garden fence and gate as well? And forget the lead! That is VERY restrictive! ):-(

A lot of people don't understand the idea of crate training and the fact that it can provide a safe and comfortable place for the dog when you're not home or they just want to go sleep/spend time there. I think some people just assume that people just put the dog in a crate that is too small for them and leave them locked up for hours and hours and hours on end.
Crate training is still very new to some people and they just don't get it.
The little info you provided makes it sound like your using your crate the way it's meant to be - don't let this woman get to you!!

A crate literally saved my dogs life!! He had very bad Separation Anxiety problems when he came to me, and I was the only person who was willing to work with him due to his destructive behavior, chewing on himself, and lack of good housebreaking. He was always stressed and he was a big time bitter and a dominant dog!! I was the only person willing to try to deal with him, and if I didn't talk the rescue into giving to me to try, he would have been euthenized. He hated the crate at first, but it helped with his dominance and anxiety bit by bit.
People just don't seem to understand that dogs have different drives and needs then people. They figure if they wouldn't do it to a human kid, then it must be cruel. Then they end up on YA asking questions about what is obviously Separation Anxiety or there dog being destructive, when a crate could have stopped these issues from happening in the first place.
It makes me sad, because owners who think crates are cruel only want to be kind to their dogs, but if they just did more reading they would learn why it works and why dogs respond to crating for many other things then potty training. These people who are anti crating only want to be good dog owners, but probably never read a puppy book in their lives.

I don't think people who freak out about crating a puppy understand the general concept. I've house trained dogs with both crates and without crates and always get the job done. But, these last two were crated and it made it so much easier for me and safer for the pups.

This is for people who know nothing about dogs. Crate training is the smartest way to train your puppy. People need to understand that you cannot properly train a dog withoutthem understanding who is the boss. The puppy needs to understand who is in charge. My dogs LOVE there kennel and also used to sleep in there with the door open. My puppy was kennel trained and never got people food (at least for the first 1 1/2 years...hehe). Now she sleeps on the bed with me and is spoiled rotten, but what husky do you know that can be off of a leash and not run off ?? and we have 2 !! Both know tons of tricks and are obidient and stay with mommy and daddy.

there's nothing wrong with crate training. my dog loves hers. it's her space and noone else's. except during the day, her brother goes in there. we have 2 pitbulls and a cockerspainel/sheepdog. the girls can stay out, but our boy cannot. he knows when it's time to go upstairs and has no complaints. one trip to the snack counter and up he goes. he's there for about 5 hours a day, not a big deal. less if dad get's home early. but hey, if your friend wants a puppy, and not have it crate trained, she must want to come home to things all chewed up. tell her it's for the puppy's safety and her sanity.

Some people react badly to different ways of doing things...Crates are great training tools if used correctly...It goes back to dogs primal behavior of living in a den...Its too bad that people act this way. If she had opened her mind a little bit she might have learned something...or at least a good debate could have come out of it!!

i have no idea why people freak when they hear the word crate! either they have never had a puppy before or they don't work and have no life and follow the dog around all damn day long! i use a crate for my puppy and its the only way to train them properly!

These are the type of people who turn their dogs into shelters because they cant house train them or they tore up there sofa or carpet . Some people are ignorant when it comes to pet care. I would never leave my puppy out of his crate while not home .

Haha! so true...my partner thought it would be like a prison & I had to fight him to get a crate for our pup, but he's seen it work & we both swear by it! These people clearly havent had a puppy &/or seen the great advantages of providing your little pooch with its own den!x

I'm not overly fond of crating a dog.It has it's purpose but my problem with it and thank GOD it's never happened to me is that the house will catch fire and the dog is stuck in a crate. If left to roam free it would I hope be smart enough to go thru a window to free itself.
