[edit] Notable incidents
The burnt wreckage of Air France Flight 358 at Toronto Pearson International AirportAs of 15 November 2007, the A340 has not had a fatal incident to date; it has suffered 4 hull-loss accidents and one further accident of yet unknown outcome:
20 January 1994 - Air France, an A340-211 (F-GNIA) was lost to fire during servicing at Charles de Gaulle International Airport.
24 July 2001 - SriLankan Airlines, an A340-300 (4R-ADD) was destroyed by an explosive charge. Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam launched a suicide attack at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
2 August 2005 - Air France Flight 358, all 297 passengers and 12 crew survived a crash and fire after their A340-300 (F-GLZQ) overshot runway 24L at Toronto Pearson International Airport in a thunderstorm. The aircraft slid into Etobicoke Creek and broke up. Forty-three were injured, 1 seriously, some passengers jumped nearly 20 ft (6 m) to the ground.
November 9, 2007 - An Iberia Airlines A340-600 was badly damaged after sliding off the runway at Ecuador’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport. The landing gear collapsed and two engines were dislodged. All 333 passengers and crew were evacuated via inflatable slides, but no serious injuries were reported.
15 November 2007 - An A340-600 was damaged during ground engine testing at Airbus' facilities at Toulouse Blagnac International Airport. Six days prior to the airplane's planned delivery to Etihad Airways, the plane pushed itself up a sloped concrete wall, suffering severe fuselage damage. The cockpit section was severed and fell to the ground from a height of about 15m atop the wall. Five people on board were injured, three of them seriously.[17]. The aircraft was written off.[18]

I would be curious to see the report regarding the first loss you posted because the rest of those were all someone else's fault and had nothing to do with the aircraft other than it happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A better question might be "how safe is Air France?" After all, the decision to land that aircraft during a severe thunderstorm leaves questions about the crew's training and or judgment.
Another might be what went wrong when they were testing the engines. Was the aircraft not properly secured? Again, it sounds like human error.

The last incident on 15 Nov 07 involving the Etihad airways aircraft was not an A340 problem. It simply misfired out of its chocks. Also, the 2001 SriLankan incident was a terrorist action and again not the A340s fault

Seems good enough to me. I'd fly on one.
After 1994 all of the mishaps were human error or unrelated to the design of the aircraft. I'm not sure of the 1994 incident, but it still could be possible that an error on someone's part could have caused the fire during servicing. If it were indeed a design fault, I'd say that it's been corrected. At least we haven't seen it happen again.
Seems like a safe enough airplane to me (for an Airbus).

Of the four instances you state, three are definitely of no fault of the design of the aircraft, they are related to human factors such as pilot or ground crew error, and terrorism. The fourth you give no explanation of the fire, which could have been caused by human factors as well.
The plane is a good plane and if it is properly maintained and operated it will continue to have an excellent safety record.

no deaths, sounds pretty impressive to me. if you think about how many flights there are around the world everyday the number of accidents is staggeringly low (no more than 5 or 6 a year). Of course we would like there to be none but its impossible to make a 100% safe vehicle of any sort, whats important is that when something does happen it is dealt with safely and then the problem is fixed.
I don't think you can ask for much more really
