Hello,

India has about 15 major languages and 844 different dialects. Most languages spoken in India belong either to the Indo-Aryan, the Dravidian, the Austroasiatic, or the Tibeto-Burman families, with some languages of the Himalayas still unclassified.

Here is a list that shows the number of people and the number of languages they speak:

Australia had about 250 different languages at the time of European colonisation but about 150 of those are now extinct and some of those left have few speakers. The country with the most languages is Papua New Guinea although Indonesia would come close. The Island of New Guinea has more than 1000 languages, about a quarter of all those in the world.

In the US, most people speak English. However, our country has no official language and there are many dialects of English as well as the other popular languages spoken here (Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, German, etc.)

For example people in the North US and South US, who both speak English, may have accents that make it difficult to understand each other at first. Also, depending on where you live in the US, words for the same object can be very different (i.e. soda, drink, pop, coke).

Another note, the US has no OFFICIAL language so as long there is a group of people who speak the same language that can communicater, their language will survive. Therfore, it is very hard to put a number or even an estimate on the answer to your question.
