My '87 4banger has gotten me through the toughest offroad trails around. With a trailer, you would probably want the six, depending on what kind of loads you will carry. Those four cylinder engines are great, last forever, have low range torque for off-roading, and make pretty good truck engines (unless you will tow a 28' ski boat)

as far as MPG goes , theres not a big difference between the 4 and 6 in trucks( it has to do with the power-weight ratio). 6 is definitely a plus but for people who has never been out of the country, driving off-road...dont knock the 4, you will see the legendary hi-lux in 4 cyl all over the world[this means out of the north american continent :)] in the most god-forsaken terrains.
if you plan on towing, the v6 torque will always be better, unless u have a 4 diesel.
best thing to do is test drive the taco4 and tow your trailer with and see if its enough.

4x4 has nothing to do with the size of the motor. I had a Subaru brat that was a small 4cly and 4 wheel drive. it was dog but it went anywhere. Now a trail needs to be behind a truck that can handle the trailers weight capacity. Check the manual of the truck it will tell you its towing capacity, then compare it to your trailers weight(when full). Typically the larger the chassis the bigger the motor the better the mpg.

It's definitely not a bad engine. Very reliable and durable. However, you might want to rethink having a truck with a 4 cylinder engine. It's going to be slow and the lack of torque is going to weigh down upon you at some point. My recommendation is the alternative to that engine - the 3.4L V6.

properly I had a 1990 Tacoma four wheel force which had the 22R engine which produced 126 H.P. and 178 lbs of torque and that i used and abused it for 4 years as a panorama settlement er. Now the 4Cyl makes 176 HP and 6Cyl250 H.P. it somewhat is overkill i think of by using fact the torque is one hundred ninety for 4 and 235 for 6cyl. no longer too lots once you think approximately the upward push in weight. additionally lots greater valuable gasoline and price. I used it too pull 15 backyard dirt trucks that have been given caught in dirt with my 22r engine.

The last thing I would want is a small truck w/ a 4. A 6 would be perfect.
