A gun collector for over 30 years just told you that it might be a Colt muzzle loader because the serial number is so low......

I'll never understand why people come on here to LIE and make a complete fool of themselves.

Your best bet would be to take your gun, unloaded, to a local gunshop for an appraisal and function test.

I'll echo the sentiment about not publishing full serial numbers on the internet. Better to say something like "#23XXX" and leave the last three digits off.

Anyway. Take it to a gun shop. They will usually have a copy of a reference guide like the Blue Book of Gun Values (search for it on Amazon.com or your local bookstore,) and, furthermore, will be trained in recognizing what specific gun you have and will be able to distinguish what shape the gun is in, and where it might fit in on the quality scale that Blue Book and other reference guides use to suggest value (yes, the books usually have instructions and pictures on how to grade a given firearm, but you have to handle guns on a regular basis to make any real sense of them.)

Better still, reputable gun shops will usually do this service for free.

#23947?
Hey!
That's MINE!
I got a recipt for it right here!

(Never give out serial numbers in a public forum, or someone could very well claim you've stolen their gun. The serial number is intended to differentiate between identical units of the same model of gun.)

(Serial numbers are not model numbers, and do not aid in the identification of a firearm)
