Small dogs do most of their fast growing up until 3 months of age then they continue to grow slowly until 8 months of age. Small dogs are generally full grown at 8 to 10 months old.

Puppies grow as big as their bodies are designed to grow too. Some grow to full size by as soon as 6 months, some take 3 years. It all depends on the breed. What you should do is do a lot of reading/research on both breeds. You'll need to know what kinds of problems they can come with and talk to your vet about any concerns you may have.

Yes, their puppy stage is what most of us would like them to stay in, but let's face it, it won't happen. Often times with a dog that is not a pure bred you will get something totally different than what you were expecting or were told by the person you obtained it from.

It's really hard to say how big your dog will actually get to be. Just take the dog for who they are and the fun and joy you get from it no matter the size. All they want back from you is the unconditional love that they give you.

Small breeds usually stop growing around 8-10 months of age although they can go up to a year. Large breeds grow up to 2 years or more. Since you dog is a mixture of two different breeds you'll just have to wait and see how big it gets. Shih tzu's get quite a bit bigger and stockier than maltese, so it could be taking after that side of the family.

Your not concerned about it growing more than it should, your concerned about it growing bigger than you want it. Hybrids are usually a bad idea and can easily have multiple severe health problems. Dogs grow, its a normal thing, growing more than you want it to grow is alot of the time hard to gauge. They can get bigger than their parents easily. I currently have a 2 year old, and he just stopped growing.

Good luck.
