I think a lot of police forces have citizenship requirements*. Which is odd, because our military accepts legal aliens. I know that some are considering accepting legal aliens but I think it's so they can get more people who speak other languages. Why don't you just email the NYPD recruiters and ask? Oh and if you are here illegally, no way, police forces do not accept anyone who has committed a felony of any kind.
* Naturalized citizens can hold any government job in the US except two, President and Vice President. For those you must be born here, but we have had at least 2 Secretaries of State and 1 Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (head of our military) that were born elsewhere. So if you aren't a citizen, become one and do it, the guy who became Chairman started out as a buck private and worked his way up.

I would contact Rob Kronenberg if anyone has been disqualified. He helped people I know appeal the decision and he is very passionate about this because he used to be the captain of the NYPD. If you don't clear your name then you may never be able to work in law enforcement.

I believe you need to be either a US citizen or permanent resident. So you can come here on a work visa, apply for residency, and then apply to NYPD once you have a green card.

You must be a United States Citizen to be an officer with the NYPD.
If you do that, then your country of origin will make no difference.
