Not to be offensive, but were just a complex organism with the same DNA as mice... just more brain cells and apposable thumbs. What is the rationale for being an atheist: knowing that we weren't created by a supreme power that judges us but rather a product of organic compounds evolving over billions of years, or being religous: knowing we were created by a supreme power that judges us? Why aren't more people riding the fence on the topic?

Think of this: there are people who have claimed to had contact with God. Doesn't that make it unfair for everybody who hasn't had contact? Of course the people who have are going to pray and go to church and subsequently be admitted to heaven. The others, not so much... it doesn't seem fair.

What's wrong is that man is still trying to rationalize his existence to suit his purposes. This isn't rational. Man is in control of nothing. He has been given the answers but, it isn't answers that he wants. He wants appeasement. Man has appeased himself for thousands of years resulting in bloodshed and failure.
He can continue to do it his way but, he is running out of time. The system he's created is eroding and on the verge of collapse. Only when he realizes that it must be done God's way will he begin to reap the positive rewards.

Futile, certainly, to the extent that we're not going to find the definitive answer at any time in the foreseeable future. But that's not going to stop anyone from speculating, especially for those that are sure they're right.
It is interesting, though, that I haven't seen so many self-proclaimed agnostics on this forum as much as atheists. Way to represent, non-believers!

"Does anyone think its futile to speculate on religion"
Yes, but it sure is entertaining.
"Why aren't more people riding the fence on the topic"
Because omnipotent omnipresent creators shouldn't have to be taken on faith, and there sure isn't any evidence. That leaves the deist stance, and that is just boring. And what is the point of a god who walked off?

Religion still serves to answer questions that science can't or won't like: Why are we here? What is our purpose?, etc. So long as there aren't concrete, tangible answers for these questions and others religion will continue to exist. Given that religion has inspired more bloodshed than any other human endeavor it's amazing that anyone would still ascribe to believing in it. PEACE!

James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
Nothing futile about that.

It's not unfair at all. To come into my house, you have to be willing to follow the rules that I have put in place. God is the same way. Follow his rules and he'll let you in.

Homo sapiens have vastly different DNA from mice. Humans have 46 chromosomes, mice have 40. Take a science course. Learn something about your physical world.

Correction: YOU are just a complex organism. I, on the other hand, am a child of God, made in the image and likeness of God, and am His adopted son through the covenant establshed by Christ..
