For a business you should get what is called an EIN. Go online to the IRS.GOV and forms and pull up a form SS 4; you can fill this out online and submit it and get an EIN; which is your tax ID number to use in all instances for your business.

Irongram is correct. Partnerships are required to have an FEIN. Even without employees, partnerships need an FEIN in order to file Form 1065.

If it is just you, your Social Security number is your tax ID number. You can get an employer ID number if you want but it is not necessary. Having one would eliminate the need to disclose your SSN to people.

If you are a partnership, you will have to register as one to file your taxes. You will be given an FEIN number. Go to IRS.gov to register.
