Just about every name in America is either from the Native Americans or the Old World. Boston, for example, is named after a small town in the UK.

That's Babylon. There's also a Jericho on Long Island. It is basically because we're a relatively new country, made up of immigrants from all over the world, and names were given to honor where we came from, or our carried-over traditions.

Countries like the states were populated by people from other countries. These people wanted to remember something from home so they named the settlements after their home town. I don't know why Springfield was so popular I think there's one in every state.
