Unfortunately we cannot strike.

Some years ago the government gladly took away many of our rights (including the right to strike) in exchange for an index linked pay award that reflected what we had given up.

Clearly this government have no intention of honouring that and therefore we are now being awarded similar amounts to other public sector workers. If this is the case then surely we should have the same rights, i.e the right to strike. All we want is fairness from the government. 1.875% is not very fair considering that we cannot take industrial action. The government have saved £40m from not backpaying the award. What they hav'nt told you is that they now have an extra £40m to spend on MP's expenses!!!!

I for one will back any industrial action that is proposed. This is not simply about a few hundred pounds. It is about our rights as workers.

If Jacqui Smith wants a fight she can damn well have one.

Many city police forces have gone on strike in the past, Boston and Memphis are two big ones that have done it. What will happen is the Governor will usually call out The National Guard to patrol those cities, until the strike is over.

Wont work. Sorry.

It's happened often in the past.

First thing that happens is the Mayor calls the Governor for help. The Gov calls out the National Guard and sends them in to police the streets. The mayor then swears them in as police officers.

So you have soldiers in combat boots with sub-machine guns running around town in armored personnel carriers instead of fat cops munching on donuts. The striking police go broke and have to go back to work.

Then the state legislature passes a law prohibiting public employees from striking.

Always happens that way.

They won't go on strike because the English aren't militant like the French unfortunately but it would be nice so the vigilantes could exact some revenge on the scumbags out there without the police intefering. Except there's more scum than vigilantes but it would make the government wake up and sit up. Especially if they're homes were targeted!

As Bear says, the Police can't strike, but the Government have done the "dirty" on them, why should we be surprised at anything this Government does?.

The effects will be negligible to the general public but the undercurrent of distrust within the police force will cause long term problems within government. I truly believe Gordon Brown will not finish his term in office either through his volountary resignation or through pressure from within his party.

A pay rise would be great, not many would do their job!! What a horrible thought if the majority did strike... The Government wouldn't know what hit them!!! I predict a riot!!lol

Out here in the sticks I don`t think there would be too much of a problem, but in the inner cities the thieves and yobs would have a field day.

My town would be fine if the police didn't show up to work. Some cities wouldn't be.
