My 15 month old daughter has a mild case of croupe. She is taking Amoxicillon. What will make her feel better at night? (besides the humidifier)Any other suggestions to help her...?

It sounds as if your child has mild croup and is recovering. Mist from humidifier and shower is indeed helpful for this and for more severe cases. But if your child really has croup spasms with very anxious face and retractions of the ribs, call the doctor or go to the ER.

There is one other intervention that works much of the time, although it sounds rather drastic. Since most croup occurs in the winter, bundle the toddler up and take him outside. The cold air rushing over the vocal cords results in improvement of the airway. Many of my patients had success with this.

Tracey is right it works every time. My eldest who is now twelve ended up in hospital twice with croup and now my three year old daughter suffers from it. The worse thing about croup is how distressing it is for the child. I usually have her in with me when she has it because her breathing is so bad. If i sense that an attack is coming on then l put a vapouriser in the bedroom 2 or 3 hours before bedtime and karvol on the pillow. L rub vicks on her chest and give her calpol. The good news is that she will grow out of it. Try elevating her mattress with a pillow under it that helps. All you can do is anything that makes her comfortable. Good luck and a happy Christmas hope shes better before then. xxxx

I love the mentholated stuff they have out there now, use the shower soothers in the shower, put the soothing vapor bath (Johnson & Johnson) in the tub. I really love the plug in they have that have the menthol in them, with those you might actually sleep. I am not too fond of humidifiers, I have found they did not work with my kids. My daughter had croup about 2 months ago and between vapor rub and everything else I mentioned, it cleared up quickly. Good Luck!!

At night time take her into the bathroom and turn the shower on with only hot, shut the door and sit in there with her (not acutally in the shower), it will help her breathe better. Two of mine have had this and it helps tons. Hope she gets better!
