Is it the same as a regular full size dog? A regular sized dog you are supposed to double the weight of the dog at 14 weeks and then you have the weight your dog is going to end up being as an adult.

My pup is 14 weeks and weighs 3.5 and is a maltese. Her dad is only like 4.5 and mom is 4 if that helps.

THANKS.

You can never tell - My 10 month old Shih Tzu has a mom that's HUGE, and a small dad, and she's TINY TINY TINY. She only weighs 6 lbs and I fear she might have trouble in the future.

I know the mother Shih Tzu's parents, though. My Shih's Mom weighs 18 pounds (she's not fat either). But her parents both weighed 8 pounds.

It really depends, so you'll have to wait for the dog to grow.

The Chihuahua Weight Chart is great to use as a guideline to estimate a mature weight within a quarter of a pound or so. This table is used only as a guide, as many things can affect the mature weight of a puppy. Weight may vary depending on its bloodline, genetics, how well the animal is fed, etc. Weight estimates before the age of 8 weeks old are often inaccurate because the puppy is still nursing or being weaned and may be heavier due to fat from the mother's rich milk. This weight chart only works with purebred Chihuahuas. The weight chart is from a book called "The Complete Chihuahua Encyclopedia" by Hilary Harmar, Pub. 1972, Arco Publishing Co., Inc.

You should be careful when getting toy dogs. They have ALOT of problems. I have had experience with smaller toy dogs, just be very careful. One word of caution I would offer is getting a harness instead of a collar. Smaller dogs tend to have problems with their breathing, specifically their trachea. The collar can make that worse and end up causing problems later on. As far as how much he will end up weighing, I would say about 5 pounds or so probably. He will probably pack on a few pounds the next few months. I had a pomeranian, his dad and mom were only 4 and 5.5, he ended up weighing 6 pounds.

One other thing you should consider is starting your little pup on supplements for joints, and other boosters. This will help him live longer and help to either prevent or at least help the conditions most smaller dogs come down with. Talk to your vet about supplements you can start him on.

Good luck! Enjoy! Remember they may be cute, but they can sometimes be a handful when it comes to medical conditions. Dog insurance is a good way to go!

Sometimes you can go by the Mom and Dad but a lot of the time they take back from past generation

Why not ask the breeder what her experience is?

If it's a good breeder, then the last 3-4 generations should be your guide.

If it was a bad breeder, anything is possible because you never know. . .
