You would need an International Driving Licence, it's just a translation of your licence into their languages.
I would seriously suggest you don't drive in India. Not only would you have to learn to drive on the correct side of the road, but Indian cars are generally manual transmissions and few Americans know how to drive these properly. Even if you do, remember the gear lever would be on your left not your right.
When I am in India I hire a car and driver. Indian roads are chaotic and it's far safer to use a local driver who is used to the conditions. Many of my friends in India don't drive their own cars but have drivers. You never need to worry about a parking space, your driver will come back for you and drive around the block until you are ready to get in the car.

Yes, as long as you have an IDP with it (which you can get from AAA).
But unless you're used to driving in India, it's highly unadvisable to do so. Rent a car with a driver or take a taxi. You will see what I mean when you get there.

Yes it is but if you want to be really sure to avoid any scams by opportunistic policemen, get an International Licence too.
In Ireland and the UK they are issued by the AA (that is not Alcoholics Anonymous-it's Automobile Association) and cost around $10 for one year. I don't know what the equivalant American arrangement is but if there is one you will be much more secure to have that extra authorisation
