That brings up the question - is Pinocchio's nose an alethiometer? Does it divine the true answer to any query? Or does it merely reflect Pinocchio's own perception of the query?
I would presume that Pinocchio's nose is more akin to our own metabolic reactions while telling falsehoods (i.e. galvanic skin response, facial and eye movement cues), and has no supernatural ability to tell fact from fiction.
If Pinocchio believes that God exists, then his nose would not grow. It may not be 'true' in an objective, scientific fashion, but it is true in that Pinocchio perceives that as the truth, and thus his metabolic prevarication induced vicissitudes are not triggered by the stress he undergoes while falsifying testimony.
