Hi, in the following sentence, what does "much less" mean?

But frankly, Patagonia is not a public company and cares much less about earning a profit on every item.

That is just bad grammar...but the phrase is widely used.

It should be...."Patagonia is not a public company. Earning a profit on every item is not a main goal.

much less makes as much sense as less more.

Good Question.

Much Less Meaning

Patagonia doesn't care nearly as much (as publicly traded companies do) about earning a profit on every item (they sell).

There's a bit more ellipses (words left out) than I'd like.

There is absolutely nothing odd about the phrase "much less" in itself.

Patagonia cares much less about profit than a public company

It doesn't quite make sense - the sentence needs a "than..." at the end (cares much less ... than about...)

I can only assume it means that they don't care about making a big profit.

hi, it means that the company named in your question doesn't care about every item. so much less means that it's not as important as "ALOT" bb, nobrethequeen
