December 13th 2007.

More than 6,000 illegal immigrants were cleared to work in the security industry, the home secretary has revealed.

A quarter of non-European Economic Area nationals registered with the Security Industry Authority (SIA) should not have been given professional licences, MPs were told on Thursday.

Jacqui Smith told the Commons that of the 39,885 non-EEA nationals processed by the SIA before July 2 this year, 6,653 did not have a right to work in the UK.

In another 4,447 cases, the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) does not believe the individuals have provide the right to work, she added.

Does this worry you because it scares the hell out of me?

Yes, it worries me. The reason they come here is to get jobs, and as long as we have people in this country willing to break the law to give these lawbreakers jobs, then we are going to continue to have this problem for a long, long time.

You sound pretty normal to me. We have an awful immigration problem in the USA and our government is doing nothing about it. I can't go there (Mexico) even for a weekend without proper paperwork. But they cross the border illegally; work without proper documentation, drive illegally, and partake of DHS and community health care programs freely. PUN INTENDED.
With our border security being totally unsatisfactory in a time when terrorist groups are roaming the world, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the elected officials to do their job to protect our citizens. It scares the hell out of a lot of us!!

I would not be scared of it I would wonder what the hell are paying these checkers who are supposed to be checking on the people working in different sectors and they cannot find out if someone is allowed to work in the country even. Have they let a serial British criminal work in the security profession as well

It worries me, but does not scare the hell out of me. As openyoureyespeople quite rightly says, these people are security guards and the like in the private sector. It is not a take over of the UK.

The reason it worries me is that this should not be happening. Not that immigration should not be happening, but rather those who are not eligible to work should not be being employed.

If you`re paranoid, then so am I! The government should stop tip toeing around human rights activists and stand up for itself and britain for the greater good of us all. They say we need migrant workers for the benefit of the economy...what about all the unemployed in THIS country?
Sorry to rag on...this really gets my goat.

Don't panic too much - SIA licensing has only come in for bouncers, parking attendants and private investigators, so far. It has nothing to do with National Intelligence Agencies who are law enforcement and military personnel.

Jobs...

Would you change job and be a security guard? Would you want to stand for 18 hours in day as a security guard?

If you answered no, why stop the person who said yes, so what if he/she is an immigrant?

Basically immigrants do the jobs the british public DONT want to do .....like clean hospitals, offices at night, traffic wardens....
