Because "God" is traditionally used as both a noun and a proper name. That is the custom in English and a few other Indo-European languages. When used as a noun, we supply an article. When used as a name, we do not.

You will notice that people add an article with the word "Lord," and omit the article for the word "Satan."

I think this is an inherent attempt to objectify, and thus, lessen, the importance or "power" of "the devil".

When people talk about "God", they do so because there is apparently only one (this all depends on the people you ask). When they say "the Devil", they're implying no specific "Devil" (even though we all know what they mean).

It's an attempt to diminish the word.

There are many gods. Followers of the bible have this conciet that theirs is unique (Well, I suppose he is nastier than most), but you will find references to 'The one true God', The God of Abraham' 'The Lord thy God' etc etc.

As for the Devil, I have some sympathy for him - hey, that reminds me of a song....

Isn't God his totally unimaginative name?
"The Devil" is also called Lucifer and Satan, so probably when the christians don't want to recognize him by his name, they recognize him as being a creature instead, showing him as more lowly.
Make sense?

Because there is only one God. One creator, and His name is Jesus Christ, the devil shows up in many forms, the Bibles that he can transform himself into an angel of light. He is a trickster, and most of all a liar and a murderer. Read John 8:44, You can read about Jesus in the Bible, start at the Gospel of Matthew, it gives the account of Jesus's birth, very good ready this time of year as we celebrate the birthday of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

God is God's name, whereas "Devil" is a description. I don't know why it's capitalized, though.
