I don't know about everywhere, but not in Chicago. When a DUI checkpoint was set up, the Officers were not even told the location until it was time to report.

NC requires that official DUI check points to be posted in the newspaper a week prior giving the location. Must also have a BATmobile, proper flood lights, all blue lights on, and signs warning of a DUI checkpoint a certain distance from it warning drivers. They official ones are usually required to be done a few times a year. Other than that they are spur of the moment things. If you and another officer want to set one up to check for whatever all you need is a patrol car with blue lights on, a reflective vest, plenty of traffic, and a citation book ready. Just notify a supervisor.

Absolutely not. Why would they anounce that, so that all the criminals and people doing something illegal can find a way to avoid them. My department does them and we usually end up with a large amount of arrests either drunk drivers or wanted persons.

NO they do not
it serves as a deterrent to some drivers it makes them think ahead of time. many drivers who are caught with violations don't pay attention to newspapers or radio announcements anyway.

it also is used at times as deception.
the highway patrol in east Tennessee is known to put signs announcing checkpoints miles ahead, just before an exit ramp that has obstructed view from the interstate, and then stops those who get off at that exit. a little trickery goes a long way.

Advance notification of a check point is not required but done for good public relations!

It really tells those who think the police are out to make easy money or fill quota's a different story.

The police don't like writing tickets anymore than violators like getting tickets.
