I have heard there are different HI Def formats for DVD movies now. I am not sure of the different kinds. I don't want to buy the wrong format and not be able to watch it on my Playstation 3. I guess I have to make sure the movie box says " Blu Ray" . Or no?

You have to buy blu- Ray its the only format that will play on the PS3. there are currently Blu ray and HD-dvd. Both parties are fighting to control the market, but as of now you have to play each disc to its specified player. Lg is coming out with a blu ray and hd dvd in one but its around 900$. Blue ray is the way to go so I've heard so far.

The Playstation 3 plays Blu-Rays discs. This is only really important if you have a high-def/plasma/lcd tv. If you have an older(ish) tv, its not really necessary to play Blu-Rays discs, especially since they cost more than regular dvds. I'm pretty sure the PS3s also play regular dvds, its just that the quality is not as good. Most people cannot tell a huge difference in the picture, unless you are really into that thing. The PS3 also comes with a bundle of blu-rays movies usually, i know WalMart at one time had a special.

The nice advantage that the PS3 has over any Blu-Ray player (apart from the games), is that Sony makes firmware upgrades to enhance your Blu-Ray experience. Just two weeks ago, Sony added the Picture in Picture functionality and the Blu-Ray profile 1.0 and profile 2.0 - this is functionality which no other Blu-Ray player on today's market has - and current Blu-Ray players will never have as they do not have the option to upgrade firmware like the PS3 has. To sum up, if BluRay capabilities change Like they have done this past month), Sony can modify the PS3 to match that. You cannot do that with a Blu-Ray player

these guys forgot that the ps3 also plays regular DVDs.... the ps3 is able to upscale DVDs making them clearer to a certain extent but the quality still isn't as good as blu-ray....

so if you want to buy DVDs and play them on your ps3 thats fine too....

hope this helped you out!:D

As the others have said, you wont have any joy if you put in a HD-DVD disc in a PS3.
But, your PS3 can upscale regular DVDs, which'll improve their picture on a HD TV.
