I love your question!!! And to think I was about to log off from boredom....
This point you have so wonderfully made is one of the many reasons I am Atheist. I find it impossible that total equality would not be the genius of a "God/Goddess" When that mentality hits the earth we will all be much better for it. If Mary had a virgin birth they should have given her twins. Male and female. Would have been a bit more convincing. it seems whoever sorted out the Pagan beliefs to keep and discard. messed up on that one.

Well, because Adam was first formed. And, the male is normally seen as the head of the family. Women, back in those days, had no value whatsoever. Why? I don't know. But, and think about this, a woman was considered 'unclean' when her monthly friend rolled around. And at that time, the sacrifice for sin must be blameless, without spot or blemish, and 'clean'. Also, a woman could not have been a preacher either.
So, that's why Jesus was a male. Because, He was a preacher, and sinless.

Forget the prophecies; better yet, use a little imagination and REWRITE them -- not too difficult. Make them all say "she . . . her . . ." and so on. No biggie -- as long as the Bible doesn't contradict in the prophecies, I would have no problem if the theology is the same but for a female Savior. With a little imagination, we could even have the Mother, the Daughter, and the (genderless) Holy Spirit.
But the Bible is what it is, and too many Christians are afraid to play mental games of "what if" that don't affect their eternity anyway. NOT ME :)

Well, I believe in the Bible, and EVERY prophecy stated that the Messiah would be male, so if had been a girl it wouldn't have fulfilled a single Old Testament Prophecy.
The fact is Jesus is male. That doesn't degrade females anymore than my being female degrades males.

Would it bother me? No. Change my faith? No.
HOWEVER,
in the time Jesus was born, females were regarded just a tad bit higher than a dog (an unclean animal). So, the Jews of that day that did follow Him, probably wouldn't have because of the total disregard placed upon the value of women.

Maybe women prefer to live a life that saves others, whereas men prefer to die for them? So, it is poetically correct for Jesus to have been male.
Anna is also correct, as you seem already to know.
"Blimey, it's a girl! And we've only brought three presents!"
2000 years later, women remain admirable despite a (supposedly) male diety; would men have regressed if they had lacked that historic example of a man behaving like a gentleman?

No, it does not matter. The only thing affected is the OT prophecy said the messiah would be male. The OT prophecy is not why I believe Jesus to be God so, it would matter not to me.

It was foretold in the old testament.
14. Therefore the Lord himself will give you [a] a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and [b] will call him Immanuel. [c]

Jesus had to live under observant Jewish law; there would have been major restrictions on Him as a woman and He would not have been able to do what He did (preaching, traveling alone, etc.). Doesn't bother me, and I consider myself a feminist.
