How long do long-term relationships last? How long does a relationship have to be to be considered long-term? At what age do people usually have their first long-term relationship? How many of those do people usually have per decade and per life?
I have a friend with borderline personality disorder. She has never been in a relationship that lasted longer than a year, and she is 37 years old.

My first 'serious' relationship was when I was 19 and it lasted 10 months. I'm not sure it would be considered long term as it was less than a year long but we lived together and it was very intense. I was with my ex fiance for 4.5 years, which I definitely consider a long term relationship. I'm now in my third year of a relationship that I am hoping will last forever. Amongst my friends, the average life span for a long term relationship is about 7 years, with serious relationships ranging from 2.5 years to over 20. I have three friends with BPD. All of them have been in at least one relationship that was over 3 years. In fact two of them have been married with kids so I don't know if your friends lack of long term relationships is down to her disorder. It could be that she just doesn't want to settle down and there is nothing wrong with that,as long as she is happy. If she isn't happy with the state of her love life and BPD is in part responsible, then that's something I think she would need to talk to a therapist about. I know it can be difficult for someone with BPD to form longstanding stable relationship but it is not impossible.

I feel that long term is not neccessarily about the length of time together but rather where you see your relationship at and how commited/in love you are. Some relationships I have considered long term after 6mo together. Some I consider not long term even if the two have been seeing eachother over a year.
Generally a year would be considered long term though.

I think that a long term relationship really depends on the person, you friend might only have had a 7 month realtionship which is long for her but i am 16 and have had a year relationship so it really all depends but i guess for me long term would be around 1 year and about how many people will have, it really depends on the person because some might buckle down easier than others

At least a year plus.....what age? C'mon, there have been high school sweethearts, does that apply to you? Any amt of 'longterm' whatever their defintion is, have l-term relatiosnhips....& to the last question, a friend w/ a pers-disorder----AT 37? Gee, maybe that might be your 'clue'.....why r u asking all these questions, could it be you that has the personality disorder? Think about it....why ask? Just go out w/ a nice lady & then let it all happen naturally from there......Best of luck!

I can't really say that there is a definite period of time that defines a long-term relationship. I think that a long-term relationship can only be labeled as such when one is looking at it from hindsight. As for your friend, one of the DSM-IV criteria for BPD is intense, unstable relationships. It is possible that the lack of a year-long relationship is due to the intensity of it.

I have been with my boyfriend for 6 years so I think it would be classed as a long term relationship and we are both a bit older than your friend. Prior to this relationship I was single for 5 years and previously married for 20 years,

I am 21 years old and have been with my boyfriend for 2.5 years.. Previously in my high school years I was with a boy for 3 years.. I think high school romances have more tendancy to end bc as people grow up they mature and change dramatically.. my current relationship is on a completely another (more mature) level than my previous relationship
