If you go by the theory of evolution then, a bird almost exactly like the chicken would have laid a fertalised egg with the slightly more evolved bird inside. This would have been the chicken.
So the egg.

The theory of evolution says the egg came first.

It's a question that has baffled scientists, academics and pub bores through the ages: What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Now a team made up of a geneticist, philosopher and chicken farmer claim to have found an answer. It was the egg.

Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

The chicken because there had to be a chicken to have and nurse the egg. Common sense the egg didn't just appear out of no where without a mom to take care of it!

SO the real question here is creation verses evolution... either why the chicken came first, as God says He created the animals.
or if you are into evolution, the thing a chicken was before it was the chicken had to evolve into an animal, if it evolved into an egg it could have been a penguin or a snake or a budgie or or or or or.
the chicken came first.

If God creating the universe is true, then the chicken would have been made first. Or maybe he made the egg first? No, it must've been the chicken. But it is possible he could have made an egg first.
Chicken? Egg? Chicken? Egg? Chicken?! Egg!? CHICKEN!? EGG!? CHICKEN!?! EGG!?!

I don't know! :P But I wouldn't mind having chicken and egg for dinner.

That was answered about 5,000 years ago in the Veda. The egg came first; The Cosmic Egg.

You might find the topic interesting since you are into philosophy.

The chicken was first. It had to lay the first egg and sit on it to hatch it.

This is philosophic question. There is no correct answer to the question. It is unanswerable and its sole purpose is to make you think. There are dozens of this sort of question. Because it is unanswerable, it is also the sort of question that grade schoolers like to ask of adults, so they can go "teehehe" when the adult gives an answer they can respond to with a suitable counter answer.
