The armed forces all fight for the same team. They are diverse components of a single war fighting machine. The Army has a specific purpose, just as does the Marines. This way when everyone does well in his particular function, wars are fought and won. Though war is horrible, if politicians and civilian administrators aren't allowed to mess things up, the military can do its job.

It's a matter of scale and timing.

If it's a job of small or medium size, of high urgency, the marines can be there to clean it up the quickest.

If It's a job that's friggin' huge (like an occupation), and the USMC isn't big enough to handle it on its own, send in the marines, then follow up quickly with the army.

Basically, the marines are the best, but due to their size you sometimes need the army as well.

Now you know what kind of answers you are going to get... the Marines will say the Marines and Army will say Army!!! But both are great at doing what they are trained to do....different roles they carry, but same goal.

I've worked with both and I'd have to say the Marines. They had my back and I had theirs. Both are good but you have to figure this... it's easier to train a small group of people than it is a larger one.

You have a skirmish, send in the Marines... you have a full blown war and need mass numbers... the Army works just fine!

Jim p.....what in gods green earth are you talking about??? are you just pulling opinions out of thin air.
Force Recon for a medium engagement??? what type of "medium engagement did you have in mind? if anything you should switch your opinion on the small (recon not ranger) and medium ( you would say ranger, i would say forget that even and use Marine Infantry). that statement absolutely negates all your credibility for your other two
statements.

Depends....
If you want to take a beach or an urban area... the Marines.

If you want to control huge areas of land, like a desert or mountains, the Army.

I had a Marine Gunnery Instructor in my Officer Basic Course who spelled it out like this....

"If its battalion or below, give it to the Marines.... If its Brigade or above, give it to the Army."

The Army is good. But every Marine is a rifleman! Who was the first in Iraq? THE MARINES! Whats the most dangerous weapon in the US Military? A Marine and his rifle....
