Please answer from experience only. The reason I ask is because I recently purchased a stainless encore since it would be so resistant. After allowing it to sit in the closet for a few months, it rusted and pitted on the barrel and frame. I thought stainless could not rust originally; however after researching it, the low grade stainless steels can (as used in guns). Is low grade stainless or blued finish more resistant to rust? Please Encore users only.

Please read the question. The question is NOT "If I don't oil my gun will it rust?" Feel free to answer the question and provide info relevant to the question.

FYI: Per TC Arms "low grade" stainless is the only stainless that can withstand the punishment firearms will produce. If you disagree with me on that, you disagree with the folks that made the gun. Hmmmm.

I guess I want someone who owns both or has owned both to tell me which is the most resistant. This SST encore rusted easier than any gun I have ever seen.

The stainless barrel is more rust resistant but any steel can rust under the right condition. The closet had humidity in the air and the gun rusted. In my gun safes, I have a box of silica crystals that take the moisture out of the air. I'm not sure if this would work in a closet or not but when the crystals absorb moisture they change color and you bake them in the oven to remove the water and they are ready to go again. Also, don't keep the gun in a case in the closet. If there's any moisture in the case lining it will keep it in contact with the metal. Just going from outside when it's cold into a warm house could make the gun sweat and if it's left in the case, the case would act like a sponge and hold the water and the gun won't day as fast as it would in open air. Hope this helps answer your question.

Yes, stainless steel is more "resistant" to rusting, but as you have seen, it can rust. I can't believe that in a dry closet for a "few" months would cause it to rust, but If it was leaning against a leather strap or gun case, then I have seen the tanic acid cause rusting very quickly on both blued and SS firearms. But I disagree that the steel in American made stainless steel firearms is "low grade".

Stainless steel is just that stainless. It is not rust prof if it was it would be rustless steel. Stainless steel will resist rust longer than blues steel. You still need to do proper maintenance on your firearms. Nothing is full proof.

The stainless steel used in custom match grade barrels is going to be a bit better quality.

To really answer your question stainless steel (Which really is not steel) is more resistance to rust than blued steel.

hi there
for starters, the stainless in your barrel isn't rusting, 308 stainless is kitchen grade and is nearly the best you can get,to make a rifle barrel that will be strong enough and ridged enough they add carbon, carbon is steel, and carbon is what is rusting, stainless by itself is a quite soft metal, blued carbon metal will resist the rust better than this type of stainless, and of course a little oil after the gun is back in the house and acclimatized helps.
