I am a huge fan of the show!

I am just wondering if the show is similiar to the actual practices of polygamists.

I'm sorry I meant more like the compound not the life of bill and his wives.

I didn't mean for my question to offend anyone of any religion. I was not saying that the polygamists are the same as mormons or LDS (sadly-I don't know enough about any of it)-I honestly was just curious.

I enjoy the show and was curious if the show is accurately portraying anyone who practices polygamy.

I just have to say, that "normal LDS folks" not only DO NOT practice polygamy, they don't WANT TO. The TV show is based on some of the polygamists who claim they are "normal" members of the church - but all of them have been excommunicated. Polygamy was practiced during a time when the church was being persecuted and driven out of the United States into the wilderness (then) of Utah. Some wacko "fundamentalists" (I hate that term) think they are still abiding god's law - but they are misguided. Please, please, the modern Church neither sanctions nor practices polygamy in any way, shape, or fashion - nor do we believe God the Father and Jesus Christ practice it either. Which brings up another question: Do Catholic nuns believe, when they marry Christ that they are practicing polygamy in some strange way? I'd really like to know the answer to that one - or why nobody talks about it.

I don't know, I have not watched the show and I don't know any Polygamists.

Most of those groups are completely crazy and abusive to their women and children, though there are some who are more along the lines of mainstream society.

BTW- The people depicted in Big Love are NOT part of the mainstream LDS church. Regardless of what people may say- Polygamy is not longer practiced or tolerated by the LDS church.

Love the show myself...

I saw a documentary, I think it is still available on HBO on demand, that had modern polygamists talking about the show.

They stated that it was pretty close to reality, and that while watching, they would laugh because some of the situations were exactly what they were dealing with.

I would guess that there is allot less drama, but the everyday stuff is probably pretty close.

The best part about the show, is that it depicts normal LDS folks pretty accurately.

There may be a handful of polygamists that can get away with a life like that... but most polygamists are much more like the Branch Davidian meets Deliverance.
