Well , that goes to show that there are still some Nice people left in this world ! You should smile an wave back , sometimes a Nice smile an a Hello , can totally make someone's day alot better !

I think you may be the kind of person that people see as a friendly face and they wish to be friendly back to you!
This is NOT a problem to be solved! This is an asset to be enjoyed and expounded upon! Smile back and say hello to them as well!
Now this might be a problem in the often more 'formal' and private Eastern portion of the US, as opposed to the much more friendly mid-west!
Besides... isn't it MUCH BETTER than when they ignore you or scowl?

Some people just exude a friendly aura and others can pick up on it. If you're cute (girl) or handsome (guy), that's just normal attention you'll need to get used to. Good looks will always attract unwanted attraction/affection.

Do you live in a small town? I used to live in a small town where it was common practice to greet people that you know. But sometimes they would see us and we wouldn't see them, so they would mention it to us later that they saw us but we didn't wave at them. I got in the habit of sort of waving at everyone because of that.
Or maybe you look familiar, or you look friendly.
