It's actually almost disgusting. This girl I know, she's my friend's friend, is 17, and she is still in highschool and she skipped class or something, and her dad spanked her! I think that's so wrong. I mean, I don't believe in spanking kids to begin with. I'm only 19, so I don't have kids, but I wouldn't ever spank my kids. It doesn't teach a lesson, and all you're really doing is taking your frustration out on them, and depending on how pissed you are, that could be reallybad. It's also teaching them that hitting someone is okay. But I mean really, 17 years old?! That's just wrong. Especially today, when spanking is seen as such a sexual thing. I think what he did was pretty disgusting. Do you agree?

17 is way too old for spankings. It definitely had a sexual undertone in there....keep an eye on that situation....

As far as spanking goes. I'm a firm believer in the "pop". When a child (not a baby, not a kid, a toddler!) is blatantly ignoring you or not listening, it's fine to give them a *soft* but *quick* "pop" on the bottom.

I abhor spanking however. When I was younger I was spanked all the time. It did no good! The last time I was spanked I was 8 years old and in a wet bathing suit (we were swimming). My dad grabbed his leather belt and spanked me. I got welts from it! My dad, who is NOT an abuser or angry man, broke down and started sobbing afterward, promising he'd never touch me or my sister again. 15 years later, he still hasn't.

I agree that parents who spank CAN definitely get out of hand. My future mother in law was spanking my 2 year old niece for not "coming here" when she wanted her to! That's freaking ridiculous! She's 2! Plus, her name rhymed with her sisters name and she couldn't tell them apart. Stupid stupid stupid! Ok, I'm getting worked up LOL.

Bottom line, I think a "pop" now and then is the only way you can get through to some kids. BUT, you have to have common sense when you do it. Know why you're doing it, have the kid know why they're getting it. Don't make a huge "punishment" out of it.

Hope this helps

There's no such thing as being too old for a spanking. She's still under his rules until she is 18. She more then likely already knew of the consequences she would face if she was skipping school and she did it anyways. The good parents will not spank when they are angry or upset. They will be calm and able to communicate with their child on why they are spanking them and to have them understand that they don't want them doing whatever they did that earnned them a spanking.

I believe that spanking is a great form of discipline for certain events in life for others it's not so good and there's an age range where it is effective. It should be a parents choice to spank their child and that it shouldn't be against the law. I can say one thing though people are correct in order for it to be effective and for it to work you can't use spankings when you're upset, angry, etc.....
I don't think it is a form of child abuse unless it gets out of hand. I was spanked as a child and it worked well. Of course there are other forms of punishment that work well with each child, you have to remember every child is different just because one punishment works for one child it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work on another. Also, I would never use a belt on my child. It would be with the hand or a wooden spoon that's it.

People who are anti-spanking like to say it causes other things such as lack of self-confidence, the only way to solve problems is with violence, etc........ From what I've seen if a spanking is done properly no child is going to think that and from experience I was never violent with anyone and never thought it was right to use it against anyone because my dad taught me that hitting someone is wrong and he also taught me how to manage my anger.

Self-Confidence is another story in itself and it has nothing to do with spankings even if the anti spanking group sites studies from surverys done by children who were spanked and who have low self-confidence it's a correlational study which means you can't deem causation from it.

The studies more then likely didn't take into account other factors that can lead to low confidence in a child. I can list tons of reason why a child would lack confidence in themselves such as being made fun of in school, being teased, harassed, negative thoughts that are put in their head from those people who are teasing them, etc........ In order for a child to really boost confidence in themselves is to change their thinking.

I keep on seeing answers on here that are quite ridiculous. Well if you spank your child it teaches them that in order to get a point across you have to do it by hitting another person. I find that very ignorant if a parent is doing there job there's not going to be any problem with the child having that issue in fact more then likely you see the children who do hit have never been disciplined in their life. Again in order for any effective punishment from spanking, grounding, timeouts, etc.....Communication is the key in all discipline from spanking, grounding, timeouts, etc..........

I totally agree, I hate spanking with a passion, Its a method of disipline used by either un-prepared or ignorant parents, if your boss spanked you he would be charged with sexual harassment and abuse....all spanking fetishers were spanked at some point growing up...17 is jst disgusting , I would never speak to him again if I were her.

Perhaps he was so POd at his daughter's irresponsible behavior that he really wanted to kick the crap out of her but instead at the last moment smacked her on a fleshy area so as not to hurt her.

yes, it's too old, but no, it's not sexual unless he got aroused by it. He should have simply put her on lockdown.

There's a huge difference between abuse and discipline, and too many people have forgotten that. If you spank your kid because you had a bad day, you're sick. If you spank your kid because they hit you, talk back, take the cat and throw it our the window, etc it's discipline. It teaches kids that certain unacceptable behaviors will bring undesirable consequences. That's real life isn't it?

Saying it teaches them it's ok to hit is like saying putting prisoners in jail teaches them it's ok to be in jail.

Spanking is inappropiate for teenagers. Can't expect them to start acting like adults if you can't treat them like one. I advocate spanking children as a last resort and so long as they know what behavior deserved the spanking.

hard to believe that someone would do that. Spanking is a sexual thing with older children but this is a young lady...WEIRD. I was spanked the last time at 8 and I felt "funny" about it... disturbed so have my bare *** showing to my 12 year old braother. SO I PISSED on my dad, a full bladder full. He never slapped my *** again.

I think you are right, she is old to be spanked but you don't know what she said or did at home to make him do that at this time? In my opinion, He is a parent and he want the best for her at school. Try to give her a good advice to be a better person, good luck.
