I have been told that if you put £10,000 plus in your bank account the inland revenue are informed. Is this true?

No.
Under Money laundering Regulations, if you deposit CASH, then the deposit taker will have to report that fact.
These days if you (unusually) deposit any large sum in you bank account they are likely to ask you about the source.
High Value Dealers, Solicitors, Accountants etc all have to comply with the regulations.
HMRC receive returns from banks and Building Socities on the amount of interest credited to the account.
