Well if you don't want bad gas mileage, stay away from that one. It more than likely gets around 10 miles per gallon. If you really can get by without 4-wheel drive, then a 2 wheel drive will give you slightly better but not much.

I actually have a '97 Dodge 1500 4x4 with the 5.9. Highway mileage when new was14 mpg. It now has 185,000+ miles and it still gets about 12.
For what I use it for it is acceptable, but you can't get better mileage from this truck.
It all depends on what you can live with mileage wise.

Probably in the 10-14 range, depending on the engine, it may be as high as 16. Large trucks tend to have bad fuel economy because they are designed to give more torque than horsepower since they are designed to pull things. There are some newly designed SUV's that have better fuel economy, but they are not designed to haul things. You are not going to find a truck (except maybe one of the small Ford Ranger and it's equivalents) with a fuel efficiency of better than 16.

1997 Dodge trucks did not come from the factory with "true duals". If you removed the catalytic converter from the truck and did not re-flash the ECM it will seriously mess with the fuel metering and cause a drop in mileage. If you tires are much larger than the stock tires it will drop the mileage off. If your transmission slips (if automatic) it will cause a drop in mileage. Tips: New cat, new O2 sensors, new tires close to stock size, new timing chain and gears

your not going to get good mileage on that one around 15-18 on the average ,and that's it,they don't get gas mileage at all, they will get the job done though, but don't buy this truck thinking you can make it get better mileage ,it wont happen,if you get 19 from it on the highway cruising, you need to celebrate it,because they don't do that too often, its going to get deep in to your wallet on gas,i know i just sold mine because of it,good luck.

whether it has a 318 or a 360, its not gonna get any better than 15 mpg,,normally less....but oddly enough the newer rams with a hemi which have around 100 more hp get up to 19 mpg in 2 wheel drive form.
