But these two areas are miles apart - one is on the coast and the other is west of the Jordan river? So, then where is Palestine? I'm sorry if I sound so ignorant, but I really want to understand this area better.

All of what is now Israel was Palestine before 1948. The British had invaded years before and controlled the region and allowed millions of European Jews to immigrate there. When it was announced in 1948 that the British were leaving, the Jewish launched an attack on the native Palestinian population, shooting bombing and burning down villages.

Millions fled to safe regions in Jordan and Egypt. There they lived in huge refugee camps. In 1967, Israel invaded these camps and annexed the territory from Jordan and Egypt.

The two territories are now called West Bank (former Jordan land) and the Gaza strip (former Egypt).

Yeah well, the area was Palestine for a while because none of the other countries of the area wanted them! And, they still don't.

Google the "six day war". And don't take the above post at face value. It's basically anti-Semitic propaganda. It's much too complicated to explain it all here. Take 10 minutes and read it for yourself.
